Hine-nui-te-po on the islands of Polynesia
In Oceania, on the islands of Polynesia, the native tribals believe that father sky Range and mother earth Papa united with each other to give birth to all creatures. Their son, Tane, forced the two apart so that the children born of the union had room to move. Tane's daughter Hine nui-te-po was the goddess of life and death. She delivered children through the womb and consumed them through her mouth. Maui, the hero of the Maori people of New Zealand, believed he could conquer death if he could travel through Hine-nui-te-po's body in the reverse direction: enter the womb and come out of her mouth. He waited for her to sleep before entering her womb. She woke up, while Maui was still inside her body. Before he could emerge from her mouth, she digested him. Death then is inevitable. And so it is, man, born of a woman, continues to die. |
