Realizing Krishna

He was arrested on the 4th of May 1908 again. In Alipore jail he was given a copy of the Gita.
Reading it he was not only ‘able to understand but also realize what Krishna demanded of Arjuna
and what he demands of those who aspire to do His work.. to renounce self-will and to
become apassive and faithful instrument in His hands.’

This realization soon became an awareness of the Divine, seen as Krishna in the form of Vasudeva.”I looked at the jail that secluded me and it was no longer by its high walls that I was imprisoned; no, it was Vasudeva who surrounded me. I walked under the branches of the tree in front of my cell but it was not the tree, I knew it was Vasudeva, I looked at the bars of my cell. And again I saw Vasudeva. It was and I felt the arms of Sri Krishna around me, the arms of my friend and Lover. I looked at the prisoners in the jail, the thieves, the murderers, the swindlers and as I looked at them I saw Vasudeva. It was Narayana who was guarding and standing sentry over me. I lay on the coarse blankets given to me .darkened misused bodies. It was not the magistrate whom I saw, it was Vasudeva. I looked at the prosecuting counsel. It was Sri Krishna who sat there and smiled. ‘Now do you fear? he said, ‘I am in all men and overrule their actions and their words”

At the lowest level of human consciousness lies the subconscious, which contains all the habits of life, including those of disease and death. Cleansing this with of its fears, pains, desires and distortions becomes of primary importance for if divinity is to descend into us, transforming our human nature, its progress will consist of not only our rising up but also pouring out all that holds us back. “No, it is not with the Empyrean that I am busy, it is rasher with the opposite end of things”. He broke through to the supramental, which is the very basis of all matter, experiencing illumination in the very cells of the body.

From his poem “Descent”
“All my cells thrill swept by a surge of splendor,
Soul and body stir with mighty rapture,
Light and still more light like an ocean billows over me, around me.
Rigid, stone-like,fixed like a hill or statue,
Vast my body feels and up bears the world’s weight;
Dire the large descent of the Godhead enters
Limbs that are mortal.”
